My Dad always told us about the winter of 1949 in Wyoming. He was only 7 years old but knew it made a significant impact on him.

The coldest winter we experienced in Craig, Colorado was February of 1989, was -51. We wore our snow suits and went to school. The next day even though it wasn’t as cold we didn’t have school because of a natural gas issue.

Having lived in Gunnison, Colorado. We experienced many cold days having well below zero temps with snow & without snow was not really a big deal. The valley of Gunnison is most always cold. I loved all the recreational things we did while living there, ie Cross Country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding. All the things I grew up doing in Craig & Steamboat Springs. We got used to the cold & had the proper resources to take care of ourselves.

Having now spent the last 5 winters in Salina, KS. I’ve now decided that the winters seem much warmer in Colorado. The wind chill actually gave me an instant headache when I went outside in -35 degrees on Thursday. I’m thankful that I don’t have to be out in the cold like that for long periods of time & appreciate those who do for that. The Midwest & Great Plains are definitely more severe feeling then the Mountains of NW & SW Colorado
