Goddamn. Why don’t we just give EVERYBODY the hero equivalent of a participation trophy? For years ex-military we’re thanked “for your service “. Nurses were so called. Firemen. Cops. And (urp) politicians. During the scamdemic, I saw yard signs- “a ————hero lives here”. Cops, many who are bullies and much worse. Nurses who got hugely fat wages plus many perks. Firemen, who who I’ve seen allow my neighbor’s house burn to the ground.

Well, I’ve known heroes. Real HEROES! And not a one but would be abashed at being labeled such.

My father was on the USS Detroit at Pearl Harbor then went on to serve in 7 major campaigns and fleet actions. He was a frogman who, during the battle of Leyte Gulf, swam ashore with his squad, to clear obstructions.

Yet he would not countenance braggadocio.
